TODAY WE ARE TABLING AT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY FROM 11AM TO 2PM TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT OUR DECEMBER 6TH BIKE COLLECTION IN THE METRO DC AREA.

IN DECEMBER OF 2007 WE HAVE FIVE COLLECTION SITES WITH OVER 100 VOLUNTEERS AND WE COLLECTED OVER 700 BIKES IN JUST ONE DAY. THE GOAL FOR 2008 IS TO DOUBLE THIS
RECORD 1400 BIKES.

Happy New Year everyone! We had a record collection on December 15, 2007 and we would like to thank everyone for their support. We are still collecting bikes from emails and telephone messages. We had over 65 volunteers and it was a great day for Wheels to Africa. Pictures of the event to be posted soon. Thanks for your support.

LARGEST BIKE COLLECTION EVER -1000 BIKES NEEDED PLEASE HELP!

Bikes can be in any condition because the bikes are used for many different purposes - transportation, transportation carts, emergency services, goods to market.
The bikes are reconditioned to meet the needs of African people. Bikes are shipped to many African nations including Namibia, Ghana, Uganda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Kenya.

Bike donations are tax deductible and a $10 check to cover shipping costs is suggested!

Bike collection wish list:

1. More volunteers for each site
2. Monetary donations to cover shipping costs to Africa
3. Emails, phone calls, mail - CONTACT everyone you know to donate their bikes
4. Free pizzas for the day of the event for the volunteers
5. Expensive bikes - we will auction off expensive bikes (over $750) to raise money
for shipping costs.
6. T-shirts KELLY GREEN just in time for Christmas for sale $15 -
$10 goes to shipping cost $5 cost of T-shirt
7. Pick up trucks and drivers
8. Volunteers to help from 3 to 5PM at a loading site for shipment to Africa
9. Send information about the event to local community groups

This organization is totally volunteer with all the money collected going to shipping or sign supply costs.

WHEELS TO AFRICA

Wheels to Africa is having an assembly program at Claremont Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia on Wednesday April 19. The program will feature His Excellency Hifikepunye Pohamba of the Namibia Embassy who will present Namibia Today. In addition, Claudia Williams, peace crop volunteer to Burkina Fusa, and John Naile a native of Ghana will discuss their experiences in Africa. The assembly is at 12:45 PM and everyone is welcome!

Pennies 4 Peace, a Claremeont club, is sponsoring the Wheels to Africa event. Thanks to everyone at Pennies 4 Peace and Katie Remedios for all their help.

Legacy for Wheels to Africa Passes Away

Hello,

Winston Duncan's grandmother passed away on January 22, 2006 and he is really missing the women who inspired him to transport WHEELS TO AFRICA. Deda Duncan, Winston's grandmother, will no longer be at the other end of the phone to hear about Winston's life. Winston called his grandmother in South Carolina nearly everyday to update her on his basketball or soccer games, school work, and Geography Bee. We will miss her voice on the answering machine encouraging us to watch sporting event on television. The television was Deda's constant companion due to her illness and she loved watching the Atlanta Braves and any other sporting event.

Deda will be missed but Winston will honor his grandmothers life with the organization "Wheels to Africa."

The December collection of bikes for Wheels to Africa was covered by various newpapers all over the United States. Winston has received numerous letters about Wheels. His grandmother sent the article that the Washingston Post wrote to her local newpaper and the week before she died and an article entitled "Grandmother Made Proud" appeared in the local Pickens paper.

On the Thursday before her death, we called to inform know her that President George Bush sent a letter to Winston thanking him for his hard work and care for his neighbors. She was very surprised and looked forward to seeing the letter in person. She never got to see the letter because she passed away before we arrived. Thanks you for your support!

Hello everyone,

We have been sharing the holiday season with Winston's grandmother. She is very sick and the time we spend with her is very precious to Winston and me. Sorry we haven't kept everyone informed of the happenings with Wheels to Africa but hopefully we will have more time to devote to the project in the near future.

However, the news of Wheels to Africa has traveled fast and many media outlets have covered the story. Here are some of the events and stories I have heard about since the event.

Voice of America called Winston for a radio interview and his face lit up because he knows that when we travel we listen to Voice of America. He is hoping someone in Namibia will hear about his project and others across the world will want to help African people as much as he does.

Various newspaper carried the article - Boston Globe, Dallas Times, Associated Press, and some newspaper in Namibia. If you see more articles please post the information on the blogspot.

Winston is starting to plan the April 22 event. As soon as school starts he is going to gather a group of his friends to brainstorm. Donations are being received from family, friends, and supporters from all over the United States.

Collection a success!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the collection Saturday. We spent 4 hours in the cold weather assembling the bikes to be transported to Namibia, and we ended up blowing the goal out of the water! We collected over 150 bikes on Saturday, and even picked up a few more on Sunday. The total was more than 160!

There are articles in the Washington Post and the Washington Examiner newspapers today about the event and the organization. Please grab a copy and check it out!

Winston Duncan distributed 32 flyers to various businesses in the Arlington area to remind everyone of the event. It was 18 degrees with the windchill but he didn't seem to mind as he hopped back in the car with his wonderful grin of accomplishment beaming. "Mom, there was one girl who went to HB Woodlawn, this guy goes to Yorktown, and a guy in the barber shop said his son told him about the assembly program at our school. This is so great, Mom thanks for helping me!"

I am Winston's Mom and I just wanted to share with everyone his excitement for his new organization. Winston, age 11, gave me $200 from his birthday money to start this organization because he wanted to help the people of Africa. Please support his idea and bring your bikes on Saturday, December 17 to Yorktown High School.
